O.K.
So I finished the dress last night. I'm really quite proud of myself.
(I know, it really doesn't look like much in the photo. Actually it kinda looks like a mu-mu, but I can assure you it doesn't look like that in real life.)
However, I think it is meant for a slightly smaller girl. It fits me, but not well enough. The arm holes are a smidge too small, and my jugs are a bit smushed in there.
But that's o.k.
Whenever I try a new project that I haven't done before, I always try to think of what else I can use the fabric for if it doesn't work out. Going into the project, I decided that if it goes completely awry, I will deconstruct it, and make an apron for work. I still have over a yard of this awesome fabric, and I can salvage the zipper, so I'm still good.
But I'm glad I tried this. I was able to practice darts...
...and install yet another zipper. My zippers are still not perfect. I need to stop avoiding them, and practice them more.
Of course the zipper doesn't match the dress. That would be silly. You can always tell when I made something, because there's always a detail that isn't quite right. :)
The dress was really simple to make. I am confident that I can use the old pattern as a template for drafting a pattern that will fit me. it'seileen had a great suggestion about making a muslin mock up first. I really should have thought about that. Strangely, I was eyeing some muslin yesterday afternoon, but passed it up when I couldn't think of a thing that I would need it for. Silly me. I should know better.
Thank you to all of you who told me I could iron my pattern pieces. I was able to fold them up quite nicely, and put them away after the debacle was all over.
I really shouldn't call it a debacle. I was amazed by the ease in which I finished it. I had no problems. Other than trying out a zipper foot for the first time.
I own quite a few of these jumpers, and I am glad I was able to actually put one together. I'm looking on the bright side here, can you tell?
So tomorrow, my jumper will become an apron. After that, I vow to myself that I will finish the pillows that I have been making. No more distractions.
Thanks for all the help.

I too avoid zippers. I went on ebay and bought a back of 50 assorted sizes and colors for just a couple dollars. Now I have no excuse for not practicing. Pencil cases for everyone!
